The Architectural Department of Tongji University is the outcome of the national adjustment of universities and departments. And the Architectural Department is the biggest one in China's architectural departments of Colleges in higher learning.
Since the establishment of the Architectural Department, its learned coteries have been advocating rational faculty and pragmaticalness, They have been eradicating the old and foster the new, and never fallow others aimlessly. Background
The Architectural Department of Tongji University is merged by the former Civil Engineering Department of Tongji University, the Architectural Depadment of St. John's University, the Architectural Department of Zhijiang University and the Architectural Department of Hangzhou Specialized Art School in 1952. In 1986, this Department was restructured again and became the College of Architecture and Urban Planning composed of Architectural Department. Urban Planning Department, Art Design Department and Landscaping Planning and Tourism Department. And the Architectural Department is the biggest one in China's architectural departments of Colleges in higher learning.
Enrolling students from all over China, The Architectural Department has two disciplines, namely, architecture (5year schooling) and the former is divided Conservation of into Iwo different while the latter being a undergraduates majoring in newly emerged architecture and academic Historical Architecture {4 year schooling) that enrol! specialties of architectural design and indoor design branch- Every year the Department enrolls 150 15 historical buildings protection (starting its trial enrollment in 20D3j. The overseas students are about 5} of the total.
Idea

Features
1、Academic environment
(1)International joint teaching mechanism
In recent years, the mode of merging together design and teaching which is practiced by architectural colleges and/or departments home and abroad have been broadened from the postgraduates to undergraduates in the Architecture Department. Presently the form of interactive cooperation of teachers and students both at home and abroad has been adopted, which leads to common recognition of subjects and credits, and this is another step forward in the internationalization of the teaching of architecture. What is more, the Department as well as the college has brought the policy of "flexible introduction of talents" into play and has engaged a number of teachers with specilized knowledge from the United States, Italy, Australia, and also from other domestic colleges or departments, and that produces profound effect.
(2) Supplement of teaching program
For a long time, there have been increasing lectures and forums given by well-known architects, specialists, scholars home and abroad. In 2003, such activities are held, in average, four times a week, which is a great supplement to the connotation and extension of the teaching program and they serve as an eye opener for the students, and that in turn helps them to achieve higher attainments.
(3)Teaching context
Based on the revised teaching program for lower classmen of the Architecture Department, the College has incorporated relevant courses series of the Urban Planning Department, Landscaping and Tourism Department and Art Design Department, and established a big platform of fundamental teaching for 4 departments and 7 specialities since 2003, forming an interactive teaching mechanism.
(4) Teaching Facilities
After years of consistent input and efforts, ideal standard has been realized in the new teaching building, library, laboratory and supporting facilities.
2、Faculty
Presently, there are 106 permanent teachers in the Architecture Department who constitute 50% of the total of the college, among whom are 24 professors, 36 associate professors and 46 lectures. Among the permanent professors, there is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, while among the spare time professors, are two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one academician of the French Academy of Architecture, three H.F.AIA. Among the permanent teachers, 48 have doctor's degree and 7 are doing their doctorate while 27 have master's degree.
Two of the teachers has been honored Prominent Teacher of the Shanghai municipality, 3 courses have been awarded municipal top-notch ones and 8 courses have been awarded university top-notch ones. Furthermore, the Department has been awarded 100 research design achievement prizes at or above the provincial or municipal level.Starting from 2003, the Architecture Department has established the system of giving public notice and going through examinations in case any teachers are to be recruited and employed, and also the system of employment under contract for assistants in teaching doctorial students.
